As recently as two years ago, forces loyal to the Yemeni government could see the capital, Sanaa, from the mountains to the east. Since Shia rebels Houthi rebels took it over in 2014, they have stayed as close to the city as possible. But now government forces are on the defensive. They were pushed back to Malibu, the last major city in the north still under government control (and home to the province of the same name). The Houthis are less than 4 km away (see map). Only airstrikes by pro-government Saudi Arabia have slowed their advance.
